"Ask Dave" Feature

Question: Have you or your staff explored any "outside the box" ideas for Colgate athletics, i.e., Michigan State-Michigan hockey game outdoor arena, Michigan State playing a doubleheader basketball game on a carrier.

Dave's Answer: We are always trying to think of what we can do better or next to improve the support of Colgate athletics.  Before we go to far out of the box.  We need to make sure we have the basic needs of a Division I program in place and running smoothly.

Question: Has Colgate ever thought of retiring football jerseys. Specifically, someone like Kenny Gamble.  I'm surprised we haven't honored some past greats in this way.

Dave's Answer: We have had so many great players that it would be hard to retire numbers because you would need to go back over 100 years and make sure you didn't slight anyone.  Also with the number of players on the squad we need all the numbers available each season.

Question: As I live in Europe and do not travel to Colgate during the winter, it would be a treat to see internet broadcasts of Colgate basketball games.  Last season I saw men's basketball romp over American and the production was almost as good as being there.  What is the plan for the future?

Dave' Answer: Our plan for next year is to have a wide variety of games available on the internet covering several of our athletic programs.

Question: You have some great coaches at Colgate, Dick Biddle in football and Emmett Davis in basketball.  Are you concerned these two will be pursued by other bigger universities.  How can we keep them at Colgate.

Dave's Answer: We have a system in place to reward our coaches that will keep us competitive in the market place.  We plan on doing everything possible to keep our excellent coaches.  Coach Biddle was given a contract extension in December after he won his fifth Patriot League title.

Question: I think there are too many awards.  Example "ECACHL Goalie of the Week" or "Patriot League Rookie of the Week."  It's starting to look like my refrigerator when my kids were five and six years old.  Do you agree?

Dave's Answer: This weekly awards serve to publicize the league and our excellent student athletes.  It has generated interest in the leagues which hopefully will lead to better fan support.

Question: Now that Colgate gives athletic scholarships for hockey and basketball, and other sports, are there plans to give athletic scholarships for football?

Dave's Answer: Presently the Patriot League only allows need-based financial aid in football.  Personally I would like to see that change to athletic scholarships because it would increase our recruiting pool.

Question: Have you considered adding baseball back to the team sport lineup?

Dave's Answer: I have been asked that question a few times since I've been at Colgate.  Presently there are no plans to bring it back.
