McVEIGH LEADS COLGATE TO DOMINATING 14-5 WIN OVER LAFAYETTE HAMILTON, NY- The Colgate Raiders women's lacrosse team exacted some revenge on Saturday in a 14-5 trouncing of Lafayette. Colgate, who lost to the Leopards twice last season, got off to a hot start with a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Patriot League rookie of the week Katie McVeigh led the Raiders with an eight point performance. Colgate dominated the first half of play, shutting out the Leopards 6-0 in the first half. Becky Ortolano scored two goals of the half, including the initial goal 22:42. Senior captain Caiti Houck earned a hat trick in the first half, scoring at 8:15, 6:28 and with just 28 seconds left in the first half. Freshman Katie McVeigh added a goal and two assists. The Raiders continued their excellent play in the second half as they outscored the Leopards 8-5, en route to nine-goal victory. McVeigh scored four goals in the half and tallied an assist. Ortolano tallied a hat trick, scoring just 51 seconds into the second half. Rebecca Sandler netted two scores and Houck added a fourth for the Raiders. Colgate's defense anchored by goalie Sue Bielamowicz held the Leopards off the board for 32 minutes of play. Bielamowicz made six saves and senior defender Shawn Mattson scooped up three groundballs.
Colgate is now 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the
Patriot League good for a first place tie with American University.
The Raiders are next in action Saturday, April 12 when they host Bucknell
in another important Patriot League match-up. |
