McVEIGH EXPLODES IN 12-8 WIN OVER MONMOUTH HAMILTON, NY- The Colgate women's lacrosse team won its fourth game in a row on Sunday, with a 12-8 victory over the Hawks of Monmouth. Once again freshman Katie McVeigh dominated the opposing defense as she netted five goals, increasing her total to 38. Colgate jumped out to a 4-0 lead and looked like it would pull away. But Monmouth fought back scoring three unanswered goals to cut the lead to one at half time. Colgate outshot Monmouth 19-5 and hit the post five times in the first half. When the Raiders did put the ball in the net, Caitlin Houck scored twice, Katie McVeigh once and Kelly Winning once. Winning assisted on Houck's first goal and freshman Eden Haladay helped Katie McVeigh to her goal. Colgate continued its dominance in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 8-5. The Raiders held an 11-4 lead at one point, but Monmouth battle to close it to 11-8 with five minutes to play. McVeigh tallied four goals in the second half and Becky Ortolano netted a second half hat trick for the Raiders. Ortolano also won 16 draws and scooped up eight groundballs. Colgate is now 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League good for a first place tie with American University. The Raiders are next in action Wednesday, April 16 when they host Albany in a non-league match-up.
