Falls to Holy Cross, 76-68
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Emily Braseth (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) led three Raiders in double-figures as the Colgate women’s basketball team fell to Patriot League leader Holy Cross, 76-68, on Tuesday evening on Cotterell Court. The game began as a back and fourth battle with six lead changes and five ties in the first half. With the score knotted at 24 apiece, the Crusaders used a 9-1 run to take the largest lead of the half, 33-25 with 2:24 remaining. Holy Cross would take the 38-31 advantage into the intermission. Colgate came out strong in the second, going basket-for-basket with the Crusaders before using a seven point drive to cut the Holy Cross lead to 43-42 at the 16:43 mark. During the run, Braseth and junior Malissa Burke (Traverse City, Mich.) scored on back-to-back possessions as Braseth hit a lay-up and Burke nailed a three-pointer. In the next possession, a turnover by Crusader Sarah Placek gave the Raiders the ball and Braseth snagged an offensive rebound to cap the drive with a lay-up. The Crusaders responded with a 14-0 scoring drive to take a 56-42 lead with 13:19 left in the game. Colgate battled back in the final four minutes, scoring 10 straight points. The drive began with a lay-up by sophomore Leandra Fuller (Harrisburg, Pa.) and was followed by a clutch three-pointer by freshman Meghan Curtin (Bronx, N.Y.). Braseth connected on one-of-two foul shots before sophomore Milaina Lagzdins (Burlington, Ontario) scored four straight points, making a lay-up, then getting a steal and going the distance for an easy bucket. The five point deficit, 68-63 is as close as the Raiders would get as Holy Cross would take the 76-68 victory. Colgate (7-14, 2-7) was led by Braseth who tallied 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists. Fuller added 15 points, snagged a team-high seven boards, had a season-high four blocked shots and three steals. Lagzdins registered 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals while Curtin had nine points and a personal-best four steals. Holy Cross (16-7, 8-1), was led by Maggie Fontana with 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Placek and Mary Rose Campbell added 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Raiders travel to West Point, N.Y., to face Army on Saturday February 15 at 1:00 p.m. |
