Colgate Eliminated From
Patriot League Tournament By Lafayette, 74-71
UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Mick Kuberka scored 16 points and Brian Burke added 14, including seven-of-eight from the charity stripe in the closing minutes, to lead fifth-seeded Lafayette to a 74-71 quarterfinal round upset over fourth-seeded Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Show Place Arena. Lafayette (15-13) advances to the semifinal round on Sunday against top-seeded American University, which defeated Lehigh, 82-69, earlier in tournament action. After Burke made a pair of free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining to give the Leopards a 74-71 lead, Colgate (17-11) had one last chance to tie the game but Mark Linebaugh’s 3-point attempt went off the back of the rim. Linebaugh, who led all scorers with 23 points, kept the Raiders within striking distance when his 3-pointer brought Colgate to within two points, 70-68, with 15 seconds left. Reggie Guy followed with two free throws for a 72-68 Lafayette lead with 14 seconds remaining before Colgate’s Tim Sullivan nailed a long 3-pointer with seven ticks remaining to make it 72-71. Lafayette dominated the Raiders in the first half racing out to a 41-29 halftime advantage including a 17-point lead at one stage. The Leopards shot 61 percent in the opening half while Colgate managed only 32 percent (9-of-28). The second half was a different story as the Raiders scored the first 10 points and made 11 of their first 15 field goals. Colgate’s 20-6 run gave the Raiders the lead for the first time, 49-47, with 13:25 remaining on Sullivan’s 3-point play. Colgate extended its lead to six points, 53-47, with 11:42 left but Lafayette came back to take the lead for good on Winston Davis’ 3-pointer, 58-55, with 7:20 remaining. Behind Linebaugh in Colgate’s scoring column was Sullivan with 12 points, Howard Blue with 11 and Pat Campolieta with 10. Blue and Campolieta had seven rebounds apiece for the Raiders. Campolieta finished his career as Colgate’s fourth all-time scorer with 1,616 points, sixth in rebounding with 698, first in steals with 193 and fourth in assists with 250. |
