Lehigh Edges Colgate 25-22 With
Second Half Comeback Nov. 3, 2001 HAMILTON, N.Y. - Quarterback Luke Ciannello threw for 350 yards and one touchdown as Lehigh downed Colgate 25-22 at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Mountain Hawks (8-0, PL 5-0) rolled up 460 yards of total offense en route to winning their 21st straight regular season game, the longest active winning streak in the country. Colgate (5-3, PL 3-1) tallied 425 yards of total offense, but four costly turnovers proved to be the difference, including a pair of interceptions of quarterback Tom McCune, who completed 21-of-32 attempts for 247 yards. The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring with 8:51 in the first quarter on Brian Kelley’s 20-yard field goal. Colgate would answer right back taking the ensuing drive 70 yards on 14 plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by McCune. Kelley would add his second field goal of the day on Lehigh’s next possession with a 27-yard kick. McCune hit fullback Jeff Stone on a play-action pass from a yard out with 9:21 remaining in the second quarter to extend Colgate’s lead to 14-6. Lehigh wideout Josh Snyder, who recorded career bests in receptions and receiving yards with 11 catches for 209 yards, got the Mountain Hawks going in the second half, scoring on a 16-yard strike from Ciannello to put Lehigh within two at 14-12. Lehigh took the lead on Ciannello’s one-yard plunge into the end zone, giving the Mountain Hawks an 18-14 advantage. Lehigh running back Jermaine Pugh pushed the lead to 25-14 with 8:49 in the contest when he took a handoff around the left side for a three-yard score. GAME NOTES - Sophomore defensive tackle Mike Latek had his first career interception stopping a Lehigh drive at the Colgate 3-yard line in the second quarter ... senior linebacker Ron Hampton led the defensive effort with 16 tackles including one TFL ... Eric Tee had eight tackles including two QB sacks and three TFL’s ... Jamaal Branch’s 31-yard run was the longest of his career, while sophomore Matt Kobelski had a career-high 44 yards receiving ... McCune’s 21 pass completions was his most since he connected on 24 against Fordham last season. |
