Colgate Rolls Over Fordham 21-9 In Patriot League Opener

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Quarterback Tom McCune threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead Colgate (1-2, 1-0) to a 21-9 win over Fordham in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Andy Kerr Stadium.

McCune, who connected on 15-of-23 passes, played in his first game since suffering a separated shoulder in the opener against Villanova.  Junior wide receiver Jamal Lamb collected a career-high 157 receiving yards on five passes including a 23-yard touchdown pass.

The Raiders rolled up 523 yards of total offense, while holding the Rams to 267 yards.

Junior running back Nate Thomas led Colgate's ground attack with 106 yards on 23 carries and sophomore Jamaal Branch added 104 yards on 16 carries.  The last time Colgate had two backs gaining 100 yards in a game came in 1998 against Bucknell with Ryan Vena and Randall Joseph each reached the century mark.

Colgate’s victory marks its sixth straight win over Fordham (1-1, 0-1).  The Rams took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with 8:33 remaining.  The visitors marched 80 yards in nine plays, capped by a 15-yard pass from Mark Carney to Travis Johnson for the touchdown.

Colgate tied the game in the second quarter on a three-yard pass play from McCune to Joe Parker with 3:48 left in the half.  The Raiders went 76 yards in 10 plays.

The Raiders took control of the game on their first seiries of the second half, when the marched 74 yards in 10 plays, capped by Thomas’ nine-yard run to give Colgate a 14-7 lead.  Nine minutes later, the Raiders drove 80 yards in nine plays with McCune hitting Lamb on a 23-yard pass for Colgate’s third touchdown of the game and a 21-7 lead.

Fordham’s final two points came on a safety when Colgate punter Brendon Biddle stepped out of the back of the end zone (on purpose) with 3:29 to go in the game..

Colgate will play host to Cornell in its next game on Sept. 29.  Kikckoff is 1:00 p.m.
