COLGATE EDGES LEHIGH AND TOWSON IN 2000 FOOTBALL COACHES’ POLL

BETHLEHEM, PA. (PL) -- Colgate was selected to edge Lehigh and Towson by the narrowest of margins in the annual Patriot League Football Coaches’ pre-season
poll, announced today.

Colgate, the defending conference co-champion which garnered two first-place votes, was chosen to finish among the top two teams by five of the other six coaches in the Patriot League and totaled 31 out of a possible 36 points in the poll.

Lehigh, which shared the league title with Colgate in 1999 but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker for the NCAA automatic bid because of a 28-24 loss to the Red Raiders, earned two first-place votes on the way to amassing 30 total points.

Towson, which was selected in the pre-season to tie for sixth place in 1999 but surprised the league with a third-place finish, also picked up two first-place votes on the way to 29 total points.

Also expected to be in the hunt for the 2000 championship is Bucknell, which gained one first-place vote and finished with 24 total points. Rounding out the voting were Holy Cross with 16 points, followed by Fordham with 10 points and Lafayette with eight points.
