COLGATE EDGES LAFAYETTE 17-14 IN PATRIOT LEAGUE GAME

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman placekicker Russ Abrams booted a career-long 40-yard field goal with 10:52 remaining in the game to lift Colgate to a 17-14 win over Lafayette Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.

Colgate (6-2, 3-0) won its eighth straight Patriot League game and 19th in its last 21 league games. The Red Raiders also assured themselves a fifth straight winning season, its their best stretch since 1979-83. Lafayette is 2-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Colgate opened the scoring in the first quarter when wide receiver Ryan Ojeda scored on a 30-yard end around play with 8:13 gone in the period. Abrams added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Lafayette came back in the second quarter to tie the game on Scott Warden’s three –yard run. Martin Brecht kicked the extra point for a 7-7 halftime tie.

Colgate jumped back in the lead with 7:35 remaining in the third period, when tailback Randall Joseph bolted 63 yards on the first play from scrimmage for a touchdown.

Lafayette gained its second tie with 1:11 left in the quarter on Marko Glavic one-yard quarterback sneak.

Joseph finished with 17 carries for 93 yards to move into fourth place on Colgate’s all-time rushing list with 2,855 yards. Warden was Lafayette’s leading rusher with 101 yards on 32 carries.

Colgate had 253 yards of total offense while Lafayette managed 228 in the defensive struggle that saw seven turnovers.
