ST. MARY’S UPSETS COLGATE 37-20

         HAMILTON, N.Y. – Quarterback Gus Papanikolas rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead St. Mary’s College to a 37-20 upset victory over Colgate Saturday.

            St. Mary’s (4-4) win snapped Colgate’s five-game winning streak and a streak of six straight non-conference wins at Andy Kerr Stadium.  Colgate is 5-2.

            Papanikolas carried 21 times for 38 yards and connected on seven-of-11 passes for 101 yards while leading the Gaels to their second straight win.

            St. Mary’s opened the scoring on the first series driving 80 yards in nine plays, capped by Papanikolas’ four-yard run.  Chris Kobe rushed for the two-point conversion.

Colgate came back five minutes later after Mark Herman recovered a fumble at the St. Mary’s 23-yard line.  Six plays later, Josh Kirklin ran six yards for a TD, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.

            Colgate took its only lead of the game four seconds into the second quarter, when Jamaal Branch capped off a 53-yard drive with a six-yard run.  Russ Abrams added the extra point for a 13-8 Colgate lead.

            St. Mary’s took a 16-13 lead into halftime after Papanikolas scored on an 18-yard run with 51 seconds left.  Bruce Rhode caught the two-point conversion.

            The Gaels upped their lead to 23-13 on Travis White’s one-yard run in the third quarter before Colgate rallied to within three points, 23-20, on Kirklin’s 13-yard pass to Jason Mattes.

            St. Mary’s put the contest away with a pair of fourth quarter TD’s on Myron Chivis’ 22-yard fumble return and Jeff Brown’s one-yard run.

            Brown was the game’s leading rusher with 117 yards on 21 carries, while Kirklin led the Red Raiders with 80 yards on 22 attempts.  St. Mary’s gained 351 yards of total offense to Colgate’s 294.
